SATURDAY 8TH MAY
“PRESIDENT’S PARTY” FEATURING THE ALLIED SHOWCASE 2010
This was the fifth year that the Allied Council had organised this event, and this year it was better than ever! Over 400 people packed the Ballroom of The Floral Hall Convention Centre in Southport for this superb display of talent! All the talent that appeared is from Allied members schools, which is a credit to the teachers concerned, and our association in general.
Full credit must go to our General Secretary, Mrs Carol Parry who works so hard to ensure the event runs smoothly, and together with our Theatre Medal Test Secretary, Glenys McGill they arrange an evening of talent that any dance society would be envious of. With the support and help of all council members, it is an evening that is well supported by teachers, parents and pupils alike. A lot of ‘behind the scenes’ work goes into organising an event on this scale, and it is done solely to Showcase the talent that the ‘Allied Dancing Association’ has amongst it’s members.
We should all be proud of the ‘Allied’, and of the talent and showmanship our member’s pupils can display. This is one event that brings all this talent together, with Championship winners, Scholarship winners, and many other ‘stars of tomorrow’ from every branch of the association! I was very proud and privileged to compare this event for a second year in succession.
The council includes every branch of the Allied in this event, and continues to make this evening better each year! No item on the programme could be singled out, as all the numbers performed were worthy of inclusion in the evening. It is dancing at it’s best!……….. and it is for the entertainment of our members, parents and pupils, and of course our invited ‘special guests’! Please continue to support this fabulous evening, which is one of the highlights of the Allied Dancing Association’s Congress Weekend!

OPEN INVENTIVE DANCE COMPETITION SUNDAY 9 MAY 2010
We had a fantastic day at the Floral Hall, Southport, which started at 12.30.pm
with our President, Mr. David Hipshaw, giving a warm welcome to the competitors and spectators.
The Compere, Caroline Roberts, gave details of the running order for the day and introduced the MC’s, David and Ann Lavery who led the general dancing with the Portland Swing
Compere introduced the officials and the competition started with the Classical Section which was run to a conclusion. The winners were Barry Earnshaw and Beverley Murch-Fowkes with their Isabella Blues and they were presented with The Alec Thompson Trophy by our President.
There was some general dancing followed by the Latin Section competition and the winners Ian and Sue Webster with their Cottonwood Cha Cha were presented with The Lillian Parry Trophy.
While the officials had a break the winning dance in the Classical Section, the Isabella Blues, was taught by Barry Earnshaw who thanked the Allied for the wonderful competition and said that the venue was an absolutely superb ballroom for competition dancing.
It was late in the afternoon when the first round of the Modern Section took place. The winners were Kevin Page and Valerie Laws with their Fairways Foxtrot and they were presented with The Walter Fletcher Trophy.
While the scripts for the Modern section were being checked the winners of the Latin Section, Ian and Sue Webster, taught their winning dance the Cottonwood Cha Cha. This was followed by the teaching of the Fairways Foxtrot by Kevin Page and Valerie Laws.
David and Ann Lavery’s programme included the September Foxtrot, Winster Waltz, Tango Mosaic, Amethyst Waltz, Rumba Magnolia, Pacino Cha Cha and the Saunter Shiraz and dancing to David Bullen’s music the floor was full.
It was good to see some new faces entering our competition with Francis and Denise Kellet competing for the first time and making the Final of the Modern Section with their Faraman Foxtrot and Alan and Amanda Parker entering their first Allied competition with their Kaycee Quickstep also making the Final.
There were 50 entries for the three competitions entered by the following competitors:
Ray Fenton-Storey & Lissia Giles, Jim and Hazel Wake, Kelly Sloan and Ellen Harrison, Alan and Amanda Parker, John and Pauline Stringfellow, Kevin Page and Valerie Laws, Denise and Francis Kellett, Neil & Lesley Marshall, Darrell & Pauline Smith, Brian and Lynn Marshall, Ian and Sue Webster, Ann Brown and Deborah Catlow, Fred and Audrey Rose, Malcolm and Liz Preskey, David and Rita Harrod, Barry Earnshaw and Beverley Murch-Fowkes.
Our Inventive day was certainly a huge success and it was a fabulous advertisement for the Allied. There were some very favourable comments from both the competitors and the spectators who said that they had had a very enjoyable day
Happy dancing
